What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small piece of text that websites send to the browser and is stored on the user’s terminal, which may be a personal computer, a mobile phone, a tablet, etc. These files allow the website to remember information about your visit, such as language and preferred options, which can make your next visit easier and make the site more useful for you.
There are basically two kind of cookies: temporary or persistent cookies. Session cookies store information only while the user accesses the Web and persistent cookies stored in the terminal data to be accessed and used in more than one session. Cookies could also be divided in technical cookies and third-party cookies.
Technical cookies (user agree is not necessary) allow the user to navigate through the website or application and use the various options or services there. Some of them are cookies closely connected to necessary tools for the service; cookies regarding the activity of information storage like preference and optimization (ex: flash player cookies if they don’t overcome the session time, e-commerce cookies that save information on the cart or language/currency preference); statistics and report cookies, where specifically used by the web manager in order to collect information in massive form.
Cookies that need a preventive agree by the users are non-technical cookies and they included:
advertising cookies, direct or third-party cookies;
retargeting cookies;
social network cookies;
statistics cookies, deal totally by third-part users.
Two different analytics tools don’t need the previous agree of the users:
analytics cookies, directly installed on the server without any third-part interaction (like – for example – Piwik);
Cookies dealt by third-part in an anonymus way as the third-part won’t be able to access, both for disaggregated data and analytics in the IP level.
